Pierre Frederic Habegger (1885-1915)

Pierre was the son of Abraham Habegger and Catherine-Elisabeth Dépoutot and a first cousin of my great-grandfather Ernst Boegli.  Pierre was born in Arbouans, Doubs, Franche-Comte, France about forty miles northwest of where his father, Abraham, was born in Moron, Switzerland.  He was married to Marguerite Camille Rivoira.

According to an entry in memorialgenweb.org he served as a private in the French Army's 35th Infantry Regiment during World War I.  His regiment was stationed along Aisne River in the Aisne region which is in northeastern France near Belgium. Following the First Battle of the Aisne in September 1914 the Germans began to build the first trenches that would establish trench warfare that came to symbolize fighting on the Western Front. The Aisne region was devastated by the millions of shells lobbed across the no man’s land by both the Germans and the Allies. Many towns in this region were thoroughly flattened and the people had very little choice but to move.

Pierre died from injuries on February 28, 1915, about seven months into the war, near Berny-Rivière.
